At the Seed to Growth conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, Quantum Coast Capital Founder & Managing Partner Matt Cimaglia led a conversation on quantum technology with Dr. Erwin Gianchandani, Assistant Director for Technology, Innovation and Partnerships at the U.S. National Science Foundation, and Jordan Shapiro of IonQ.
With Dr. Gianchandani, the discussion covered why Congress created NSF’s Technology, Innovation and Partnerships directorate, how federal research funding reaches startups through non-dilutive awards, and the goal of building a quantum workforce at the scale now forming around AI.
With Shapiro, the conversation turned to industry: what quantum advantage means in practice, the timeline behind the move to post-quantum cryptography, and how modest a quantum computer’s power needs are compared with other computing buildouts.
Matt’s point for the audience was that quantum will reach every part of technology, much as electricity and the internet did, and that the security risk is already present, because data captured today can be decrypted later.
